My sincerest condolences. I am very sad to hear this news. As a young artist/illustrator sketching at the museum one day in 1995, David took an interest and was very supportive. He showed his workplace, and bought one of my pieces, a view of the main gallery. He introduced me to Peter James who also gave me much support and friendship. A great loss.

My sincerest condolences. It is such a shock to hear of David's death. I worked for David as undergraduate at the Natural History Museum one summer. I will always remember his enthusiasm and energy for lichens - and life in general. Most importantly I remember his great kindness, generosity and encouragement to someone just starting in botany, sadly a rare thing.
