CLOSED-Harvey Family Funeral Home Obituary

David, born October 23, 1947 to Sonia and Joseph Gemes, applied his intellect and creativity to all his many endeavors. A California kid, he applied himself to achieve whatever he set his sights on- whether it be most efficient paper boy; exemplary Disneyland host; running several marathons; or winning admission to UC San Francisco Medical School after just three years of undergraduate study. Dr. Gemes retired from Group Health as an anesthesiologist, with fond memories of those he had the privilege to work with. He was a NW Aids Foundation Board member and volunteered with Rise and Shine. In retirement, he followed his passion for gardening, reading and writing, and was blessed with a writing group which probably laughed and drank wine together more than they wrote. Although physically diminished in the final days with rapid progression dementia and a series of strokes, his spirit and kindness preserved. Our beloved David passed through to God’s hands and heart on June 8, 2021.

Dr. Gemes is preceded in his passing by his parents Sonia and Joseph Gemes; his adored sister Beverly; and his beloved dog Grace. He is survived by his husband, Paul Sherfey; his beautiful sisters Mary Ann Martin and Laura Gregoire (Tim); brother-in-law Steve Hillman; niece Heather; nephews Christian, John, Ryan, and Theron; and numerous special cousins and loyal friends.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on

Monday, June 14th at 10:00am at St. James Cathedral.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Food Bank at St. Mary’s.

Not sure what to say?

I'm wondering if this is the same David Gemes who attended Valle Lindo Elementary School in South El Monte, CA. I think maybe. I am so sorry ♥

Paul,
His obituary was a beautiful tribute to him. Such a special man, he will be missed. God bless you and my cousins as you grapple with your great loss.
Love,
Rose, Geoff, Jessica and Justin
