David Miles Hartley

As a young girl, I worked for David when he became Building Editor at Sunset Magazine. He was a wonderful person. Before I worked for him I was a rover and known as the girl whose fiance was killed in Viet Nam. David was one who showed me great compassion during that time and then hired me as his assistant. He invited me to dinner at his house in San Francisco. His wife made gespachio. My privilege to have known him.

Yesterday, San Francisco Heritage's Lilienthal Society had its first in-person gathering after several years of Covid social distancing. In a commemoration of three valued members who had passed, that's when I learned that David was no longer with us. Our paths crossed at Heritage, SPUR and the Civil Grand Jury Association. Besides those mutual interests, I think most people would concur that he was sociable, intelligent and had a presence that enlivened any group he was with. Reading...
