Cousin David was truly one of the greatest of the greatest generation. Imagine the courage of an eighteen year old boy with three months of flight training assuming command of a C46 and crew, flying to India via Brazil and North Africa, and then beginning the very dangerous duty of daily flights to and from China over the Himalayan Mountains to keep our Chinese allies supplied. Navigation aids were primitive by today's standards, and pilots would often be guided by the sight of crashes...

It always made my day when Dave would come into the CU and share stories of his family and adventures. I am grateful that I had the privilege to know him and his family, as well as to hear him talk about his life and loved ones.

Thank you Dave.

To the family Hertel. - Many will remember the great stories told by this very active man over the kitchen table at 11's Engine House during his retirement years. A live well lived.

David was a wonderful guy - a rascal as well as a gentleman. I will miss our morning visits, his war and Mitzi stories, and hearing he and Howie bowling together. He leaves a hole,

Dave was a great friend and firefighter and will be missed stopping by the stations after his retirement occasionally meeting the new guys.

Michelle & I were so saddened to read Deb's Dad's obituary. He obviously led a robust life. May you find comfort in your memories.
