David K. Cooper once joked to his friend, "There''s no rush like bullets flying over your head in the morning." "He would smile and blow it off," said his friend Matt Mountjoy. "He really was a brave person." Cooper, 25, of Williamsburg, Ky., died Aug. 27 of wounds suffered from small-arms fire in Qadasiyah. He was a 2001 high school graduate and was assigned to Fort Hood. Williamsburg Mayor Roddy Harrison was also a teacher and assistant coach at Williamsburg High School when Cooper was a student. "He was a smart kid," Harrison said. "A good student, very likable. He had a great sense of humor, and he had a pretty decent political mind." He was serving his third tour in Iraq and was considering a career in technology. Bill Conn, a classmate, said he last spoke to Cooper after he had returned from his first tour in Iraq. "He was happy to serve, but he hated being away," Conn said. "But he was going to serve, that was his duty." He is survived by his wife, Amanda. Conn said most would remember Cooper as very intelligent, outgoing and a good friend. "He never met a stranger," Conn said.

Coop, it's been to long man... Today marks 11 years since we lost Wallace, and in a couple months it'll be 9 since you went to stand watch with him. I still think about you guys, you're always there with me. I'm hoping this year I'll be able to make my way back down to see you. I'll bring the whiskey and pour some out for you. Till we meet again bro

Cooper,
Few days go by where I find myself unable to think of the time we spent on the CSM detail. Your last assignment. Our last mission together. The years have been difficult because your loss was personal and heavy. You were an extraordinary person. You took time to teach others, and found a way to make people smile in the worst of conditions. As many do, I wish I had more time with you, and I will always cherish the time we spent together. You are never forgotten. Miss you brother.
