Army Staff Sgt. David L. Loyd was called up for deployment to the Middle East in February but returned home for 10 days this spring because his home in Jackson, Tenn., was damaged by a tornado. When it came time for his return to Kuwait, he was eager to get back to serving his country, his wife, Pamela, said. "He wouldn''t have had it any other way," she said. A member of the Tennessee National Guard, the 44-year-old Loyd died Aug. 5 of a heart attack in Kuwait. He is also survived by two sons. Family members say Loyd enjoyed working as a truck mechanic and spent his spare time riding his Harley Davidson and tinkering with cars. "But most of all he loved serving his country," said his mother-in-law, Bonnie Flinn, of Terre Haute, Ind., where the Loyds both grew up.

Not sure what to say?

Fort Hood has an annual memorial to fallen service members (primarily Soldiers), comprised of boots in a formation. It is categorized by year and is very somber. One of my friends pointed out SSG Loyd's boot (with card photo) because his last name is similar to mine (Lloyd) and I apparently even resemble the guy! I'm sorry that I never got to meet him. I just wanted to share this so that the family/friends know that he's still remembered.

As part of the Mindful Memorial Day program at Arlington Cemetery my son was given a yellow ribbon to honor Staff Sgt. David L. Loyd.

My heart goes out to his family and friends and his sacrifice, and yours, will never be forgotten.

Please know that your sacrifice will not be forgotten. On Saturday May 23 I was honored to read the names of Tennessee's fallen in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars at a ceremony in Washington DC at the WWII Memorial. SSgt. David Loyd is remembered.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you...

My heartfelt sympathy to the Loyd family in the loss of David. I did not know David, but my heart is broken and I am saddened for your loss of such a fine young person and hero. May God bring you peace in your heart as you reflect on all the wonderful memories you hold so close. Please know that you are in my heart and prayers. My heart was touched by the many wonderful/beautiful things written about you.David it has been over 4 years since you were taken. Please know that you are my hero...

Sincere sympathy and love, Pat - R.N.
