David Francis Matt, 72, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy following a courageous 2 year battle with pancreatic cancer. Service: 10 a.m. Monday at St. John XXIII Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Dustin Vu. Burial: 2:30 p.m. Monday at Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines. A Scripture Service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, at Teahen Funeral Home where friends may visit with the family from 3 to 7 p.m., and after 9 a.m. on Monday at the church.
David is survived by his wife Sandy; three children Christa (Doug) Gach of Waukee, Stephanie (Travis) Hodapp of Ankeny, and Brad (Kelli) Matt of Windsor Heights; four grandchildren Sydney Hodapp, Morgan Gach, Evan Hodapp and Colin Gach; five sisters Kathleen (Marv) Lahti, Judy (Cletus) White, Mary (Daryl) Helgerson, Phyllis (Bob) Ottaway, and Linda (Mike) Plaht; three brothers Delbert (Eileen) Matt, James (Debbie) Matt, and Ricky Matt; three sisters-in-law Peggy (Jerry) Becker, Jeanne McGrath, and Gerri (Tim) Allison; two brothers-in-law Harold (Kristi) Hageman, and Bill (Jennie) Hageman and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Odelia Matt; mother and father-in-law Lillian and Adrian Hageman; and brother-in-law Dick Johnson.
David was born on December 28, 1943 in Postville, the son of Harold and Odelia Stroschein Matt. He attended Loras College. He married Sandra Hageman on August 29, 1970 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors, in Festina. He served in the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967. David worked at Farmstead Foods for 23 years, then as a Systems Operator for 21 years at General Mills retiring in 2012.
David lived his life surrounded by his family and friends and enjoyed being with his grandkids. He was a handyman, who also took pleasure in gardening, golfing, playing cards and going to casinos.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, St. John XXIII Catholic Church or Hospice of Mercy.
