Following the dissolution of his first marriage in 1958, David lived alone for three years with his four children. On December 27, 1961 he married Betty Jane (Lambert) Terry, the widow of Dr. E. Alden, (Joe) Terry, creating a family with eight children. He and Betty Jane were pleased to have celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary recently.

He also served on the Board of the Louisville Red Cross Chapter from 1982 to 1988 and on the board of the Red Cross Blood Services Board from 1990 through 2002. David also served as a board member of Presbyterian Homes and Services of Kentucky for 14 years and remained active with the organization until his death. David belonged to Highland Presbyterian Church and served as deacon, elder and finance committee chair for more than 30 years. He also served as board member and treasurer of Asia Institute Inc. (Crane House) from 1988-2001.
