David and I were in grad school together. I wish I had an anecdote to share that would illuminate something about him that perhaps gets overlooked. I don't. There are however fond memories of a person whom one always--without exception--enjoyed being around. The things that stick in my mind are those that I suspect just about everyone who knew David would highlight: his warm and generous spirit, his intelligence and commitment to his craft, the quiet sense of humor, and the thoroughgoing...

Like Jim Robards, I was a fellow grad student with Dave at UW. We lost touch over the years, which I regret, but the words 'kind', 'gentle' (not to be confused with weak), 'thoughtful' and 'witty' capture the essence of the fellow I knew. I'm sure we all feel much diminished by his passing.

David and I were in graduate school together at the University of Wisconsin. He was my first classmate friend. There was no better friend. He was witty and warm. He and I, and our wives of the time, socialized. We shared meals, trips, and libations. He made being a poor grad student an adventure. In later years I visited him at Annapolis, and he was gracious enough to give us a tour after spending a leisurely lunch together. I only learned of his passing when I went to...

David was a wonderful man. He spoke Navy and I spoke AF. He will be missed.

David was a kind and sagacious colleague. In USNA's History Department, he will be remembered for his unfailing dedication, professionalism, and good sense. His scholarly and administrative contributions were top tier. And he always made it look easy. He was a great boss and mentor; I recall his advice frequently and I wish we had him with us longer. I know I speak for many when I say I miss him and all that he brought to our shared work in Annapolis (including his beloved dogs in his office...
