David Prober, 88, passed away Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at St Joseph's Hospital, Chicago, Ill.
Born Aug. 15, 1922, in Chicago, to Mary and Edward Prober, he was the oldest of two sons. He attended Lane Technical High School in Chicago and the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. He served in the Army in 1944-45 and was honorably discharged. In 1947, he married Dorothy Mabel and moved to DeKalb. He was chairman and CEO of DeKalb Iron & Metal Co., which he purchased from his father-in-law in 1954. Dorothy passed away in 1982. In 1984, he married Miriam Chaplik.
Dave was very active in the DeKalb community. He was a founding member of Congregation Beth Shalom. He was active in many local organizations, including the Masons and Shriners, PTA, Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, Kishwaukee Country Club, as well as state and national scrap-dealer associations. He served as chairman of many of those organizations for at least one term. He enjoyed golf, badminton, bowling, going to Chicago White Sox games, before the strike, and any activity involving his family.
Survivors include his wife, Miriam Chaplik Prober of Chicago; his daughters, Lea (Jeff) Gorman of DeKalb, Ellen (Mark) Hein of DeKalb, Rita (Bill) Hutchins of Sycamore and Ann Azzouz of Chicago; his step-daughters, Elynne (Richard) Aleskow of Chicago, Linda (Alan) Harris of Highland Park and Susan Chaplik of Chicago; five grandchildren, Greg Gorman of Indiana, Jenna Gorman of Colorado, Michelle (Jeff) Gomberg of Chicago, John (Courtney) Hein of Colorado and Jake Hutchins of Sycamore; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Lincoln Hein of Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy; and his brother, Leo, who was killed in World War II.
The family would like to thank his loving caregivers Eric and Nathaniel Gonzales.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at Ronan-Moore Finch Funeral Home in DeKalb, with Rabbi Maralee Gordon officiating. Visitation will be from noon-1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Garden of Shalom at Fairview Park Cemetery, DeKalb.
