Not sure what to say?

David Rubin was a soul mate in the guise of a Sarah Lawrence don. He taught me so much guided me so very far into my life in a few years that I am astonished that I did not dream his passing in 2008. Thanks and namaste.

I knew David in a most fantastical and fanciful place--Kathmandu Nepal where we both landed up as Fulbrighters in 1972. He had so many sides to his character but my favorite was his sense of humor. He had a great laugh.

As Tim noted, David was a major part of our "instant community" of Fulbrighters in Nepal during 1972-73. China Marks, Bob Palmer (who called us with the sad news yesterday), Katherine Blair Salant, and a handful of other Asia-addicted world wanderers found companionship and an intellectual home together in the cross-roads of Kathmandu. Suzanne and I met David in Kathmandu in 1972. David was world travelled and sophisticated and we were fresh out of our undergraduate programs. I fondly remember David and am happy that we were able to spend time with him.

FRIENDS AND FORMER COLLEAGUES of David Rubin's are invited to attend a memorial gathering on Saturday, March 29th, at 12:00 noon. For more information, please contact me.

Please note that we've had to change the date and time.

David and I met when we both were in Kathmandu, Nepal, on Fulbright fellowships, 1972-1973. I think I only saw him one more time, a few years later, in New York City at some Fulbright event. But he was so vivid a personality, so bright, so particular, so wonderful that I never forgot him. When I read his obit, everything came back. I'll attend his memorial service if I possibly can.

David G. Rubin
In Memoriam

I cannot claim to have known David since 1957 (not having been then yet extant), but I certainly did know him since I was knee high to a June bug. He remains in my earliest memories. When I was the ripe age of 5 or 6, David joined our family on a holiday to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. I remember cajoling David to join me for “Happy Hour” at the Halcyon Days Resort at precisely four o’clock while the rest of the family dilly-dallied about. ...
