David B. Ruiz, 74, passed away on April 25, 2023. David was born to Celia and Ascension Ruiz in San Antonio, TX on July 11, 1948. After graduating from G.W. Brackenridge High School, he went on to serve in the US Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict as a firefighter. After his tour of duty was complete, he transferred to Randolph AFB where he served as a civilian firefighter until his retirement.
Upon returning home, he married his high school sweetheart, Cynthia Lozano in 1972. Together they produced two sons, Gary in 1974, followed by Gregory in 1976. In 2009, David welcomed his daughter-in-law, Mariana Ortega Ruiz into the family when she married Gregory. Then in 2012, he was blessed by his granddaughter Olivia Neko.
He spent his years working hard to ensure his family was provided for, sometimes even working warehouse jobs on the side. In retirement, David found various hobbies to focus on including a passion for Mariachi music fueled by his sons as they became musicians themselves. “Uncle” David also spent his time loving and caring for all his numerous nieces and nephews. He would seldom miss any family event and always had a smile at the ready.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gregory; mother, Celia; sister, Lucy; and his three brothers, Raul, Roland, and Richard.
He is survived by his former wife Cynthia; son Gary; daughter-in-law Mariana; his granddaughter, Olivia; and sister, Celia Aragon (Dan)
A Rosary will be recited on Sunday, May 21st at 6:00pm at the Angelus Chapel. Funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, May 22nd at 9:30am at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower.
