Dave Russ, age 77, passed away in Appleton, WI, on July 12,, 2025 with his family by his side after a battle with cancer.

Born and raised in Rhinelander, WI, Dave was a proud graduate of the RHS Class of 1966 and a lifelong supporter of all things Hodag. He continued his education at Milwaukee Area Technical College, earning a degree in Mortuary Science in 1970. Following graduation, Dave returned to his beloved hometown to begin his lifelong career at Hildebrand Funeral Home. During his 47-year career, he provided compassionate care and support to countless families.

Dave’s devotion to his community was unwavering. He was a proud member of Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, Hodag Athletic Booster Club, and First United Methodist Church. Whether through his professional work, volunteer efforts, or support of local athletics, Dave always found ways to give back and lift up those around him.

An avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting trips to South Dakota with his closest friends. He was a fan of all sports-especially Hodag athletics, Green Bay Packers, and Milwaukee Brewers and spent time coaching and supporting youth sports programs in Rhinelander.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and Leo Russ and his in-laws Al & Florence Onson. His legacy of kindness, service, and love will live on in the hearts of his family and the Rhinelander community he so dearly loved.

Will be missed very much

Sue, we are so very sorry. Our sincere sympathy, and prayers for your family to ultimately receive the peace which passes all understanding, which only our Father can give.

Sue, Stacy, Kyle-We are so very saddened to learn of Dave's passing. I have so many memories of my time working with him. Dave's humor was off the charts and the best boss I ever had. Dave was in his element every morning at the office with his "coffee clutch". He loved you and the kids and I imagine he was a terrific grandpa. He will be truly missed. We have thought of you both often over the years. Thoughts and prayers to you all. Kevin and Doreen Rogalla

Sue and family I am so sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of the two of you when I cared for your mom Florence years ago at the Alice Haus. I will try to make his service if not I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I am currently going through cancer myself and have issues. Prayers for all of you.

I’m very sad to be reading this. Without words Dave taught me important lessons about compassion, community and being human. He was an intuitive and supportive friend. With warm memories I am so grateful to have worked with Dave and “the best work family ever” at Hildebrand’s. My heartfelt condolences to Sue and family.

I am SO saddened by this news. I enjoyed spending many years volunteering alongside Dave as ribbon cutting Ambassadors in Rhinelander. His quick wit and unique sense of humor always brought a laugh. And his height made him the anchor of the top row in all our photos! So many fond memories. God speed my friend. Eternal rest be yours.
My deepest sympathies to Sue and their family, along with my prayers for comfort and peace.

What a kind and good man! I always appreciated him so much as we worked together. "Well done, good and faithful servant!" The world is a better place because you walked among us.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you Sue, and all of your family.

Sue, I am so sorry for your loss. Dave was such A wonderful man. My your memories heal your hearts.
