When he was about 3, David S. Stewart spray-painted his mother's light blue Thunderbird dark green and his parents knew they were "in for a rocky road." That road turned out to be short _ and sweet. "He turned into a good, good man," his father said. Stewart, 24, of Bogalusa, La., died Aug. 3 when his vehicle was hit by an explosive south of Haditha. He was based at Gulfport. Stewart was widely known as a "wild child" who many remember with a twinkle in their eyes and a chuckle. Friends describe him as "all boy" in his early days. In 2003, Stewart was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal after he risked his life while his amphibious track vehicle was under attack. The weapon jammed and Stewart climbed to the top turret while under fire to repair it. A few minutes later, he did it again. Stewart attended several high schools but dropped out and got a GED. After working local odd jobs for a few years after high school, Stewart made the choice to join the Marines in 2001. He is survived by his parents, Sandra and Joey.

Not sure what to say?

To the family of Cpl. David S. Stewart,

I recently learned about David and the sacrifices he made for our country. Our baseball team is honoring fallen heroes and we each had the privilege of wearing their names on the back of our jerseys, and I got to wear David’s name. I read his story and learned that he was brave and selfless. Thank you David for all you have done.

My boy, how I miss you each and every day with every breath I take. Love Mama

Bear,

It was a pleasure working with you at the USDA research station. Thank you for making my life better by fighting for my freedom.

A few years back I finally played World of War craft. It was similar to the Everquest you talked about. Sure enough I enjoyed pummeling through easier parts of the game as I became more powerful just as you described. I thought about you as I played it.

I miss you this memorial day weekend. Thank you for being a hero.

Dear friend and family of CPL. David S. Stewart. I'm sorry for your lost. I learned about him in 4th grade writing class. I know he was brave and strong. I will remember him as a great strong, brave man. I understand it's sad.I also learned freedom isn't free. All gave some some gave all we will always remember those who gave up there life. I'm thankful for what he did.

Dear David family, thank you for allowing David to serve in the Military. He helped us and we will always remember him and the sacrifices he made for our country. I learned about him in my 4th Grade Writing class while we were learning the importance of the great men and women that died fighting for our country.

I want the family to know I am so sorry for your loss of David. There is something I need to send to the family. In St Louis during the week of 9/11 Anniversary there was a display in Forest Park on Art Hill, a display of flags to remember and honor each military personnel killed since 9/11/01 from the War on Terror. Each flag was dedicated. I don't know how I did it, but I bought the flag dedicated to David. I want to send you David's Flag.

I know you may be concerned being...

Bear will never be forgotten as the light shone so bright with Bear and with everyone he met including myself and my children. Andrea, Sandra, Jo-Anna, Joe and all those who knew Bear, God Bless and know one day even though Bear is watching down on us, will unite once again. God Bless one and all from all of us in Queensland, Australia.

Bear, I love you always and forever!

A son, brother, love, friend, a true Marine's Marine..... I spend today in prayer, reflection, & remembrance of a man I was blessed to love and be loved by. I thank God for every moment I shared with Bear and the Stewart family. Not a day goes by that I don't think of him. I can still see his smile, hear his laugh and feel his arms around me when I close my eyes. While I'll never know why, I now find comfort in God that I will be with Bear again one day. In the meantime I know he is up three...

Today I celebrate an amazing Marine I had the pleasure of loving and being loved by. Today I celebrate your life and our love Cpl Stewart. I'll never forget the feeling the last time I wrapped my arms around you this day. I love you Marine! RIP Marine. Job well done! Semper fi! Gone but NEVER forgotten!
