I remember David as a warm, kind and generous soul. He truly cared about people and always had a welcoming smile you saw him. He was a great storyteller and knew more about San Francisco and its history than most other native sons and daughters. I will always be grateful for his mentoring me as a new Health Commissioner and treated me with the great respect he showed with everyone he worked with. A great man and huge loss for the City that loved him.

I am very saddened to learn of David’s passing. I met him during his tenure as Police Commissioner and we worked together on many initiatives in the Mission District.
To me he was a community leader, role model and a true friend of all that had the privilege to have known him.
