Mr. Slater died Saturday, October 20, 2012, in a boating accident. David Patrick Slater was born on January 30, 1962, in Davenport, a son of Joseph L. and Maxine (Panek) Slater, Sr. He was united in marriage to Kandice Marcussen on July 1, 1989. Dave was a graduate of Davenport West High School and received a degree in Business from Iowa State University in 1984. He owned Eastern Iowa Grain Inspection and Weighing Service. Dave was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. Dave was the consummate family and people person. His talents were obvious to all who knew him, whether old friends or new acquaintances. You were never a stranger for long once he shook your hand. His wit and quick mind would put everyone at ease. He worked non-stop and his energy was boundless, as those who worked with him and for him would attest. As a father and family man he was even more committed. His wife and children will have more than a lifetime of memories to cherish. Family get-togethers were not complete without Dave. Dave was passionate in his love for the outdoors. His idea of a perfect day included walking the trails, operating the dozer, and riding 4-wheelers with his kids at the Wapsi. He loved taking his kids on fishing excursions in Alaska and elsewhere. Dave's exploits on the ski slopes were legendary, as witnessed humorously by many family members. Dave's dedication to wildlife conservation ideals led him to be instrumental in waterfowl habitat and preservation in Iowa and Illinois. Dave is survived by his wife Kandice and their children, Weston, Brennan, and Kayleigh, all of Davenport; his brother Joseph (Pamela) Slater, Jr., his nephew and niece, Joey and Mackensie, all of Long Grove; his mother and father-in-law, Kermit and Arlene Marcussen of Harlan, Iowa; sister in law and brother in law Jeannine and Lloyd Thomas of Fort Collins, CO.; and brother in law and sister in law Lynn and Tricia Marcussen of Orange, CA. David was preceded in death by his parents, and a nephew, Jacob Slater. May they rest in peace. Donations may be made to the Slater family in anticipation of establishing a wildlife conservation fund for future educational programs or purposes.
