Not sure what to say?

My deepest empathies to the Smart family on David's passing. He was my mentor while I was a graduate student in the mid 70s at UNC. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering support was immensely helpful while I learned from him at the counseling center. He would be proud of his efforts as I have been a psychologist for 45 years and owe much to his tutelage.

Dear Julie and family,

Please accept my sincere condolences on the death of your beloved husband and father. I was saddened to read David's obituary tonight and learn of his death. The written tribute beautifully captured the fine, kind, and good man he was. It was my privilege to have known him--and all of you--while you lived in Greeley. All of you blessed my life in many ways. May you each feel the Lord's comfort and peace at this time of great sadness and loss.

Lots of good memories of Uncle David. I will miss him. It was always fun to be around him. Sometimes it was a lunch or dinner for the Smart family college students in Provo, a family reunion, or a visit just because. Thinking of you all at this time.

Dave was kind enough to mentor me through my undergraduate degree in Psychology at BYU, and then while I was a doctoral student at the University of Maryland, he hired me to return to BYU to work for a summer where I met my husband. He has been so kind and generous to me and one of the biggest influences in my professional life. I am honored to have known him.

David is one of the kindest and intellectually humble men I have met. He was a fantastic mentor, insightful researcher, a thoughtful scholar, compassionate human being and a colleague of excellence. He will be deeply missed.

So sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I will always cherish the many memories of our lifelong friendship. Our friendship goes back to the beginning of time. The Smart family were a wonderful bunch and I just can't express what a wonderful opportunity it has been to have so many great experiences with Dave. Truly one of the best of the best.

Blessings to Julie and family.
