Although our paths have not crossed since then I have always remembered Dave's kindness and friendship to a newcomer to Shaker. David was a part of our life since our first times in cleveland- 1967.. We were next door neighbors -and friends. When they moved to Portland, we visited them there-- and when they returned to Cleveland Heights, we were delighted and amazed.
Suzy and I worked on his election for CL hts council- great fun.
I loved his company- we shared books and ideas. We laughed together. Our children loved him, I love him.
He will be forever alive in our hearts.

Dear Renie,
Smitty's face and presence at Amherst always inspired engagement-usually a passing joke or wisecrack, but always with a smile on his face and a willingness to engage. He was never sarcastic or mean-spirited, a mark of some separation from most of us undergrads, wanting to score verbal points and not minding if it was at someone else's expense.
