As well as being an outstanding writer and pianist, David was a warm, generous human being: an oasis of kindness in times less troubled than these. We knew each other for over 25 years, both of us presenting pre-concert talks for the opera and elsewhere. Whenever we unexpectedly stumbled into one another along the Portland Park blocks, we would stop and talk about music, the arts, The Oregonian and the amazing sense of community here in Portland. Until rain chased us away. One of my fondest...

David was an important influence in my career. He was so supportive and also a sound critic. I always wanted to know his thoughts.. Rest in peace dear friend. Alyce

We lived opposite David and Judith, across the alley, when they lived on Maple. When my son Hart was in K at Abernethy, Daniel was his Reading Buddy. I was sad when they moved to a home with a bigger yard! David was so friendly and kind.

I was so sorry to hear of David's passing. I got to know him through my father who started exchanging letters and phone call many years ago--initially a critique of one of David's critiques. I had the opportunity to meet David one time when I was visiting Portland and was impressed by his smarts and the kindness he exhibited with my father. David actually wrote a column about my Dad when we moved my parents from Portland to the Bay Area and I spoke with David after he announced his retirement...

My wife and I met David during his "salon" piano gatherings pre-covid. He was an inspiring teacher with a deep love and appreciation for music. He was always positive and upbeat in his presentation and his view of life. He will surely be missed by many who had their lives touched by him. With condolences to the family, Michael Shiffman

Dave was both sweet and erudite, tough and generous. I knew him for too brief a time, but on each occasion we had good, serious conversation, ranging from music to literature to travel to relationships. We spent several hours talking about his extraordinary trip across the country by bike, an attempt to gain inner harmony after the death of his wife. His connection to friends and family from his past on that trip was memorable. I will miss him deeply. Roger Porter

Martin, I'm sorry that you've lost your brother. Best to you and your family. Collie

Over the years I read many of David Stabler's columns, not because I am fan of classical music, but because he wrote so well and made the content interesting. He was a true writer and literary journalist. I am sure there are numerous readers who felt the same. Condolences...
