As a former LIU employee, I always found David Steinberg to be kind, dedicated, eloquent, and professional. I recall our meeting over coffee one day regarding new responsibilities that he encouraged me to take on - he was very convincing yet supportive. My husband and I really enjoyed holiday parties in his beautiful home. Sincere condolences to the family on his passing.

Along with my almost lifelong friend and fellow UM student Marilyn S. Meyer, we took Dr. Steinberg's course on the History of Southeast Asia in 1968, right smack in the middle of the VietNam war. It was so eye opening, and he was such an amazing professor that Marilyn and I still talk about him 55 years later! What a complete mensch!

Dr. Steinberg was a challenging and kind mentor to me when I was an undergraduate at the University of Michigan. He was very generous with his time and attention. He gave a first generation college student the confidence to pursue an academic career. I owe him a great deal. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

I knew David and his first wife Sally when we both taught at the University of Michigan in 1964 and 1965. Met them again in Cambridge, MA some years later. A true gentleman.
