FLOYDS KNOBS TONG, DAVID HAGAN, "The measure of a happy life is not from the fewer or more suns we behold, the fewer or more breaths we draw, or meals we repeat, but from having once lived well, acted our part handsomely, and made our exit cheerfully." Lord Shaftsbury 49, of Floyds Knobs, previously from Louisville, died after a brave battle with cancer, on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 in his loving home surrounded by friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Arthur Tong and Margaret Zeta Hagan Tong.

David is survived by his lifelong soul mate, Lisa Atwell Tong, two beautiful daughters, Savanna Christian Tong, 24, and Elizabeth Quinn Tong, 11; three adoring grandsons, Trey Baus, 5 and twins, Logan and Brayden, 4; a younger brother John Eric Tong (Kay) and their children, Jason, Jeremy and Sara, whom he loved dearly.

He is survived by his mother-in-law, Barbara Rivera (Gabe); four sisters-in-law, Debbie Bailey (Bill) of Okeechobee, FL, Sherry Tutor (Denny) of Fruitland Park, FL, Natalie London (Mike) of Woodburn, KY; Julie Gardner (Troy) of Bowling Green and a brother-in-law, Bobby Atwell, Jr. (Penny) of Adams, TN as well as countless aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, all of whom respected and loved David immensely. He will also be missed by dear friends, neighbors, colleagues and students.

David was a 1977 graduate of St. Xavier High School, received his BA in graphic design in 1986 and a Masters of Arts in Teaching in 1992 from the University of Louisville. He was a teacher at Highland Middle School for the past 14 years, where he touched the lives of many children and their parents encouraging learning and building strong leaders for the future. He had a wide variety of interests and loves, among them, nature, sports, music, art and people. David brought his warmth, adventuresome spirit, sense of humor, quick wit and his loving smile to all those who had the fortune to meet him. He will live on through all those who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be held at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. on Saturday, September 26 from 5 - 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 27, 2 - 4 p.m. with his life's memorial service on Sunday at Douglass Blvd. Christian Church at 6 p.m. with a reception to follow at 7 p.m. The burial at Cave Hill Cemetery will occur privately with the family at a later date.

The family wanted to thank the many individuals who provided care and compassion to David during his illness. Among those are John Hamm, Dr. Gary Vitale, Dr. Tobias, the staff of the Norton Cancer Institute and Norton Hospital, in particular, nurses, Melinda, Ruth Ann, Jan and Al, as well as friends, Paul & Bee Schreck, Mike Bowling, the "St. X Brotherhood", Kevin Goodwin and Dave and Cindy Becker. His wife would like to thank the many co-workers at Kosair Children's Hospital who have provided love and support over the past few months.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Children's Foundation Ride To Conquer Cancer or a scholarship fund being established at L & N Federal Credit Union for his children and grandchildren.

Not sure what to say?

Hello, I'm Antonio Profumo and was a fellow UofL student with David. We also did part-time "work study" together (for a year or so) at the Photographic Archives at UofL's Ekstrom Library. I got to know David reasonably well during that time and after I graduated. I would continue to "hang-out" with David at his home, every so often. He even attended my wedding in '91. Unfortunately, I lost contact with him at some point in the mid-late 90's. I've often thought of him over the years and...

I was a student of Mr. Tong at Highland Middle School. He helped me a lot when I was going through a rough patch of my life. he was like a best friend to me. if I was having issues with anything , he was the first person I would go to. Rest easy Mr. Tong.

I was a student of Mr. Tong, and he was the only reason that I made it to high school. He worked with me everyday, even after school, for 3 years, until I was able to graduate. I'm deeply saddened by his passing, even now. I just wish I could have told him years later how much he meant to me. The world lost a great man. He was, and shall always be, my favorite teacher.

One year has passed since losing my sweet husband David to cancer. His memory shines on each day as I look into the eyes of our daughter and watch what a beautiful, kind, funny person she has become...very much a reflection of David. Peace to each of you as we all remember great times had with him and carry him with us as we continue our journeys here. Love to all, Lisa

Hi, I'm Amelia Long. I was one of Mr. Tong's students, he was my favorite teacher and always will be. He helped me through so much in middle school, and I was broken when I heard he died.
I see that his grave is in Cave Hill, but I was wondering if someone could give me a location in the cemetery. It's a huge one; I got lost in there once.
I'd like to visit his grave, because I never got to tell him how good I was doing in 7th grade. My email is [email protected], so if anyone...

Six months have passed since David's death; many still think of him, give us love and strength, and grieve over missing his loving personality. David is still a part of our lives through all that he did and was. Peace to all who miss him. He said to me just a few days before he died, 'don't be sad'. He wanted us to live life fully and not to waste any time in regret or longing for that which we cannot have..easier said than done. My thoughts are with all those who miss him, my sweet...

Dear Tong Family,
I knew David when we both worked at the Paul Schultz Co. and we later ended up in teacher training together. I only saw him once after that, but I could tell he had a happy life. David was special and I am so sad that he is gone from us so soon. I will keep you all in my prayers.

I was truly sad to hear of David's passing. I had the privelage of knowing him in high school and working as a colleague at Highland Middle. David had such a kind spirit and able to give so much to his students. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. My life was blessed having known David!

My name is Rachel Banks, and i only had Mr. Tong once last year when i was in 8th grade. And i didn't like him at first but i grew to love him as a teacher and to love his class. He made it fun and exciting. And when i first heard he was sick i was so sad. He was one of the best teachers ever at Highland and when i heard he got even more sick i was so upset and i would ask him if he was alright when i saw him the last time and he told me "yes rachel i'm fine thank you for caring" and i wish i...
