Lake George- David C. Wilkes, or “Big Dave” as many knew him, passed away peacefully at Glens Falls Hospital on Thursday, March 31st, 2022, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
David was born on July 8th, 1966, to Tilton and Judy Wilkes, the ninth of their ten children. While he was one of the youngest Wilkes boys, he was by far the largest, towering over the family at a mighty 6’8”. The only thing larger than David was his heart.
David never had children of his own, but it was always apparent that he was meant to be the very best Uncle in the world, or the best Uncle you wish you had. You will hear many stories from his friends about how he was there for them and their families, because that’s just who he was, Larger than life, with a heart to match.
David was an adventurer; never afraid to take big leaps in life. He left the Adirondacks in the mid-90s to move to Mississippi, where he traveled all over the South doing direct sales. The amount of lives he has touched is immeasurable.
When he returned to his beloved Adirondacks in the late 90s, he became one of the most familiar, friendly faces of Lake George, that is, unless you were causing a problem at Duffy’s. He loved to spend time on the lake with his friend, Mike Grasso and family. He was known to do the occasional donut in a sports car with his buddy, Marty Kelly, especially in his twenties! He kept the good times rolling, kept people safe, and took care of everyone, even when his own health was in decline.
David was predeceased by his parents, Tilton and Judy, as well his brothers, Peter, Samuel, and Patrick Wilkes. He leaves behind his siblings; Anne (Al Weiner) Wilkes of Colorado Springs, CO; Libby (James) Andrus of Delmar, NY; John (Susie) Wilkes of Warrensburg, NY; Tilton Wilkes of Pottersville, NY; Mary Kay (Chris) Aiken of Pottersville, NY; and Sally (Gary) Lawrence of Wevertown, NY. He also leaves behind 10 nieces and nephews, and 10 great nieces and nephews who will cherish him in their memories forever.
If you want to honor Big Dave, please go spend time with a loved one, laugh as loud as you can, and see the good in everyone.
