Compton, Debbie Jo (nee Prophet), 68
Born into the grace of Christ’s resurrection, Debbie Jo Compton passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2025, surrounded by love and memories. A daughter, sister, wife, and lifelong learner, Debbie lived a life filled with both remarkable accomplishments and an infectious zest for life. She was born in Springfield, Missouri, to Tom and Dorothy (nee Leach) Prophet.
Debbie’s passion for education and personal growth was evident from a young age. She graduated from high school in Springfield, Missouri, in 1974, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 1981. Her pursuit of knowledge didn’t stop there; Debbie went on to complete a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) and a Juris Doctorate (JD) at St. Louis University in 1991. In recognition of her accomplishments, she was listed in Marquis Who’s Who in the Midwest (24th Edition, 1994/1995), a prestigious honor that highlighted her dedication and success in multiple fields.
Debbie’s career spanned diverse fields. She worked as a nurse, managed businesses, and built a career as a commercial pilot, achieving her fixed-wing, instrument rating and soloing in rotor craft (helicopter). In addition, Debbie worked in aircraft sales, where her passion for aviation truly took flight. She was not only a professional in her fields but a mentor, advocate, and community leader. Debbie served on the Board of Directors for the ASPCA and volunteered her time at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, demonstrating her deep commitment to both animal welfare and children’s health.
Her personal life reflected the same love and commitment. Debbie’s heart belonged to her husband, James "Jim" S. Compton, whom she married on June 21, 1980, at the College Church at St. Louis University. Their journey together began in October 1978 when Jim was introduced to her by his medical school roommate. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. They traveled the world, shared countless hours at their farm, and embraced every moment with joy.
Debbie was also a devoted animal lover to her beloved cats, and had a passion for flying. Her adventurous spirit led her to explore both the skies and the world, and she found peace in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was a quiet moment at home or a new adventure abroad. She was known for her humor, her kindness, and her ability to brighten any room with her presence.
Debbie leaves behind her loving husband, Jim; her sister, Nan Susan (David) Hart; her niece, Mandy (Pat) Gray; as well as countless friends, colleagues, and admirers who will miss her warmth, wisdom, and spirit. Debbie’s legacy will live on through the lives she touched and the many ways she made the world a better place.
Her life was a testament to the power of education, love, and living fully, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May she rest in peace, her journey now complete.
