SMITH, Debbie Alexander, 51, of Richmond, passed away from breast cancer on Sunday, August 9, 2009. She was preceded in death by her father, Edwin Alexander; and her mother-in-law, Shirley Smith. She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Charles "Rusty" Smith; her children, Kellie, Michael, Katherine and Andrew Smith; her mother, Mary Alexander; sister, Marcia Anderson (Danny); her twin brother, Doug Alexander (Susan), all of Richmond; also numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. Debbie was a 1976 graduate of Douglas S. Freeman High School and a 1981 graduate of VCU. She first met her loving husband in high school, where they became sweethearts and lifelong soulmates. A devoted wife, mother and friend, Debbie enjoyed spending time at the beach, in her garden and, of course, in the kitchen. Always the consummate hostess and perfectionist, she loved preparing for gatherings with friends and family. Her passion for parties and dinners was especially evident during the holiday season when she could show off her Christmas ornament collection and baking skills. Debbie's greatest gift was her personality, the perfect mix of southern charm and determination. Her passion for people and life was unmatched and will live through her four beautiful children. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Parham Chapel-Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., and where funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Richmond Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 4905 Radford Ave., Suite 209, Richmond, Va. 23230.

Marcia I am so sorry to hear of Debbie's passing. She was truly an amazing person and your family is so special. My sister has finished her treatment for now but I know now first hand the cruelness of this disease and will continue to support the fight for a cure. You are an amazing daughter, sister, and friend. God bless you as you go through this healing process.
Sincerely,
Lynne Aldrich

Rusty and Family, Although I haven't seen you all in many years, I was saddened to learn of Debbie's passing. I remember her as kind and fun-loving and will never forget the many hours of laughter we shared throughout high school. I'm sure that she will be missed, but her vibrant spirit will live on through your four children. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Sue (Hammack) Weiss Douglas Freeman HS, Class of '76

Rusty,
I am glad that Danny could be there for Debbie's celebration of life. She will be sorely missed. She fought the cancer battle for a long time. God Bless her. She is now RUNNING with the angels where she had so many problems with her legs before. Be strong but you and the kids will be fine. We will keep you guys in our prayers.

To The Smith Family,
Though we weren't privileged to know Debbie for a long time, we were just captivated by her beautiful spirit the first time we met her. You can see that same spirit reflected in the whole family. We are grieving with you and praying for you. Psalm 34:18 promises that, "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." May you find peace in knowing that through JESUS CHRIST we have eternal life. May GOD bless you and keep you...

Rusty, Andrew and Family,
We are sooo sorry to hear of your loss. We just saw Debbie (Rusty and your daughter) walking in the neighborhood recently. We are surprised to hear of this news. Debbie was a kind, giving person and fought her disease with dignity. She was always a big help to me at Gayton Elem. when I was Hospitality Chair. Rusty, we know how active you are with your children (and ours too - Soccer Coach to Anna in grade school.) You are a strong family, and we know...

Rusty and family,
We were shocked to see where Debbie passed away. Having moved away from the neighborhood years ago, we sadly lost touch. Debbie was always such fun to be around and had a great love of life. We had such a great time doing Girl Scouts together when a group of us attempted to be leaders one year!
You all will be close in our thoughts and prayers for now and the coming days. May your many memories provide you comfort now and in the future.
