As Clark's assistant at the California Farm Bureau for several years, I learned a lot about the business and the man. He was a one-of-a-kind boss who often tried to affect the demeanor of a gruff, hard-nosed newsman. No one that worked with him bought into his act because the next minute he might share some delightful story about his grandkids. My take on Clark was that he was like a toasted marshmallow--hard and crusty on the outside, but all soft, sweet and gooey on the inside. Many people...
