Herring Groseclose Funeral Home - Walla Walla Obituary

Delores Marian Bennington, 92, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on March 9, 2024.

Delores was born on March 22, 1931, to Albert and Marian VanDyke, in Forest Grove, Oregon. She graduated from St. Matthew’s Grade School in Hillsboro, Oregon. Delores moved with her family to Walla Walla in 1946 when her father became manager of the new Birds Eye plant. She graduated from St. Patrick High School, then attended Washington State College and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.

She worked at First Federal Savings and Loan in Walla Walla. Delores married William H. Bennington on November 15, 1952, at St. Patrick Church. She then helped her husband on the farm while raising their five children. Delores was very involved in her children’s activities, including 4-H, Fair Court and sports. She was a loving grandma and enjoyed spending time with each of her grandchildren. They cherished her. Delores was a member of St. Patrick Church where she was a Eucharistic Minister. She devoted over 20 years counting the offertory money collected at mass. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, praying the Rosary, watching game shows, solving Union-Bulletin crossword puzzles and doing sudoku puzzles.

Delores was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Marian VanDyke; her sister, Joyce King; and brother, Jack VanDyke. Her husband William H. (Bill) Bennington passed away August 29, 2001.

She is survived by her brother, Burton VanDyke; children, Rebecca Bennington-Geyer, Sue Fink (Greg), Brenda Hoover, William V. (Bill) Bennington and Amy McClanahan (Kevin); six grandchildren, Ashley Coronado (Justin), James Hoover (Mindy), Lynsey Sherry (Brendan), Holly Butorac (Jase), Lauren Wolf (Jarett), and Natalie Fink; and seven great-grandchildren.

A Rosary service will be held at the Chapel of Herring Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 6:00 pm. Viewing and visitation will be held at 2:00 pm until after the Rosary. A funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 10:00 am, with Father Dale Tuckerman, celebrant. Concluding services and vault interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

Not sure what to say?

I met Delores later in life. She was an absolute pleasure to be around. She loved doing crosswords and LOVED Bingo. The days she would get her hair done at the Salon, she went around just beaming with pride. She will be greatly Missed.

She was pillar of the Valley Chapel community.

Becky and family - Sincere condolences on the loss of your mother. May your many great memories and the love of family and friends comfort you at this time.
