I am shocked and saddened by the news of the passing of my mentor and friend, Jim Caraley. We worked together for 8 years while he was Director of the Graduate Program in Public Policy and Administration at Columbia, and I was a student in the Sociology Department, on articles about Congressional Voting and Urban Politics and a book. He was the most gracious and generous professor I knew at the time, a role model and someone who I greatly admired and respected, and I recall long talks over...

Jim was my teacher, mentor, colleague and Chairman throughout my life as a student and faculty member at Barnard. I am grateful for my many memories of him and his powerful influence on my life, almong others. His legacy will live on in the many lives he touched. His marriage to Vilma was the best thing that ever happened to him and gave him his happiest years. My heartfelt sympathy to Vilma, Lisa and all who loved him. May Jim’s memory be a blessing.

Jim was such a lovely, gentle man, who happened to be incredibly accomplished. He will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Our deepest sympathy to his family.
