Tough, With a Studious Side
The seeds of Denease Conley's toughness could be seen early on. She once had a fight with an older sister who locked herself in the bathroom, and to get her out, Denny, as she was known, threw a cherry bomb at the bathroom door.

In high school in Kansas City, she studied karate, loved Bruce Lee and even painted a poster of him on her wall. She served in the Navy for four years, and afterward became a security guard at the World Trade Center. When a supervisor taunted her by saying she was too weak to work as a firefighter, she took up his challenge and passed the qualifying exams to become a New York City firefighter.

She also had a studious side, receiving a bachelor's degree in English and philosophy from Hunter College. "Her apartment was filled with books," said her sister, Barbara Haynes. "She had a thirst for knowledge. She read everything. I called her the professional college student. And this was a child that at one time did not want to go to school."

Ms. Haynes was surprised at how many people packed the memorial service. "Several people said my sister helped save their lives," she said. "One friend said the last time he saw Denny she was holding a door open with a fireman. Knowing my sister, she had this take-charge attitude that she had to help other people get out."

Not sure what to say?

You helped saved lives at the cost of your own. Just seen a video of you holding doors to 2 WTC for FDNY firefighters, and I wondered if you made it to safety yourself. Sadly, you didn't. I never knew you in life but you will never be forgotten

I often wondered if the lady who held the door open for the firemen to enter the WTC on 09/11/01 survived. Finally found out on 03/07/23 that she did not and even came to know her name. My condolences to her family. She has always been in my thoughts and now will forever be in my heart. May she rest in peace.

Remembering Denease on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

We will never forget the heroes like Denease. Blessings to your family.

Forever in our hearts.

I am a sophomore at Shanley High School and we are learning about 9/11. I was told to research somebody named Denease Conley, so I did. I know now that she was an amazing woman who gave her life trying to help those in need. She will always live in our hearts. #neverforget #hero

Denny always remembered......Always loved!

I miss my childhood friend...I often still think about our time together.. Truly she was an awesome friend to walk home with from school together every day...Eat lunches together... Talk about anything we wanted to share that day... laughing, crying, we got confused about somethings and we worked out the solution before we went our separate ways... Usually home....I miss those innocent moments, for we was very young... There is so many memories but not enough room to write every detail....
