Teacher, music director and conductor, beloved husband
Dennis F. Boyle passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, September 25, 2024.
Son of John F. (Frank) and Rose (Juchter) Boyle, Dennis was the beloved husband of Diane Erbeck Boyle. They were married for 40 years and have lived in Linden, NJ, since 1991.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, on February 3, 1948, Dennis grew up in Scotch Plains, NJ, from the age of four. He attended St. Bartholomew School in Scotch Plains and was Salutatorian of the first graduating class of Union Catholic Boys High School (1966). In 2017 Dennis was the inaugural recipient of the newly established Arts Award when he was inducted into the Union Catholic Hall of Fame.
Dennis received a Bachelor of Arts in Music (cum laude) at Montclair State University, and both a Master of Education and a Music Supervisor's Certificate in Music at The College of New Jersey.
He taught for 44 years at a wide variety of levels: Union Township Elementary and Junior High School, Highland Park Middle School and High School, East Brunswick High School, Seton Hall University, and Rutgers Preparatory School in Somerset.
Dennis founded and served as Music Director and Conductor of the Woodlyn Chorale in Linden, was Assistant Conductor of the Summit Chorale, founding Music Director and Conductor of the Highland Park Community Chorus, and both founded and directed Diaden, a semi-professional chamber choir. Dennis was also the Artistic Director and Conductor of Philomusica Chamber Choir, based in Middlesex County, for 39 years.
In addition to sharing a love of music, Dennis and Diane enjoyed traveling. Many summers were spent attending concerts at Tanglewood in the Berkshires and cruising the East Coast. Boulder, CO and Whitefish, MT (near Glacier National Park) also held special memories, as did singing in the Hawaiian International Choral Festival in Oahu.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 27, 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 PM at Rossi Funeral Home, 1937 Westfield Avenue, Scotch Plains, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 28 at 10:30 AM at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2032 Westfield Avenue, Scotch Plains, immediately followed by interment at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia. The Funeral Mass will be livestreamed. For further information or to leave an online condolence message please visit www.therossifuneralhome.com

Not sure what to say?

I was a member of Philomusica in the early 2000s, long enough to go to England on a beautiful singing tour. I also accompanied on piano for awhile. Dennis was a musician´s musician who contributed so much to the cultural life of East Brunswick and beyond. A fine human being as well as a fine musician, he will be sorely missed. Before I was diagnosed with a chronic illness I coughed so much I´d have to stop singing. Dennis never got upset with me. He only cared that I was very ill and...

Dear Diane,
I’m so very sorry to hear about the loss of Dennis. I’ve been very touched reading all of the beautiful messages from his colleagues, friends, and students—it’s clear what an impact he had upon so many. I know that music was his gift and his passion, and what a legacy he has left in passing that knowledge, love, and passion on to future generations. Please know that you both are in my heart and on my mind, and I would like to think of Dennis being reunited with Aunt Rose and...

In Memory of Dennis

Union Catholic Boys High School - 1966 Yearbook

The UC Community is saddened by the passing of one of our own, Dennis '66 & UCHOF '17. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and we are united in prayer for the repose of his soul.

I signed this book last week but realized I had something more to add. By including the Hallelujah Chorus in his winter concerts (something that well-meaning schools would probably object to these days), Mr. Boyle unknowingly connected me with what became my favorite piece of music. I probably would never have encountered it otherwise - at least not in such a powerful setting. Thank you, Mr. Boyle.

Dennis was loved by members of the Rutgers Prep School Music Department as well as the students who sang in his choirs. Dennis exemplified excellence in his work. He brought beautiful music into the world of those who sang with and for him. It was my privilege to have had him as a colleague and friend.

Dennis will be greatly missed. Diane, you did a marvelous job taking care of Dennis in the last years of his life. Beth and I appreciated seeing Dennis and you after Neil's induction into UC hall of Fame. I was very moved watching Dennis and Neil speaking with each other. They were close friends and I was touched by their love and concern for each other. Diane, you are in our thoughts and prayers. May the many memories you created with Dennis over the past forty years sustain you during the...

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.
My deepest Condolences.
