DENNIS S. DOWNING

I am so sad to hear of Mr. Downing's passing. I have many fond memories of him as a teacher at DCHS, Class of '74- please know he helped me through a difficult time as a junior when my parents were considering divorce, and his wise words and humor carried me through. Mr. Downing was a true inspiration to the young lives he touched. Our daughter, Catherine, had and still does have, great respect for him. He was a wonderful coach to all he trained. A parents dream for his coaching and teaching abilities.

From 1990 - 1994 I had the privilege of having Mr. Downing as a track coach at CLC. He was always so very encouraging to us, and willing to let us compete in events we were interested in. He was a wonderful guide for a teenage girl trying to find her way in sports in the '90's. Looking back, I have to say he had a gift for dealing with rowdy, head-strong teenage girls. He was always calm, even when we deserved different. I can say the same about him...

So many of my memories in High school at CLC involve Mr Downing. I was lucky enough to have him as both my track and cross country coach and Physics teacher. He was a truly wonderful person and always managed to keep his cool surrounded by strong willed teenage girls. He had a great way of talking one on one with his athletes in a calm and reassuring manner. Our track teams were dominate in the mid 90's and many times our only running coach was Mr Downing while other teams had multiple...
