Dennis W. Smith, age 72 of Hobart passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014. He was born in Gary, Indiana on July 1, 1941 to the late James and Kathryn Smith. He was a longtime Hobart resident and was formerly of Gary.

Dennis was a 1959 graduate of Hobart High School. He also graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, and the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy 25th Session. He retired from the Gary Police Force with 32 years of service and was a member of the FOP Lodge #61. Dennis and his wife, Pat owned and operated Hobart Sports from 1979 to 1991. He enjoyed antique cars, motorcycles and hunting.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Pat Smith of Hobart, IN; 2 sons, Gregory (Melinda) Smith of Valparaiso, IN; Jeffery (David Meyer) Smith of Crown Point, IN; 2 grandchildren, Chloe and Nathan Smith both of Valparaiso, IN; and special aunt, Milly (Earl) Rice of Hobart, IN.

Visitation is Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a funeral service at 7 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart. Cremation will follow with Rees Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Call (219) 942-2109 or visit us online at www.Reesfuneralhomes.com.
