Dennis Smith

I have fond memories from my high school years of dennis smith's REPORT FROM ENGINE CO. 82. I am a lifelong firebuff, history buff, writer. I alway from childhood wished that I had what it takes to be a firefighter. I never pursued that lifelong dream but thanks to dennis's fine writing over the long years I lived that life vicariously. He was a good, compassionate, honorable human being, who lived his life for others in the true spirit of the FDNY & all firefighters. Thanks dennis; RIP.

I am so sorry to know that Dennis passed. I grew up on East 59th and went to grade school at St. John’s. I’ve read “A Song for Mary”, twice and will keep it on my shelf as long as I’m here. I was in class with Billy Smith, and I do remember Dennis.
I am so proud to have known such a unique individual and his great lifetime of accomplishments and helping others.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dennis Smith which includes the International Community of firefighters and fire fans. Dennis was a One of a Kind Original who by his words and his writing was able to bring the actual world to firefighting to those who othewise might not have known that world. By doing so he inspired many who were so influenced to become firefighters and firefans.

I´m so sad to hear this news. I worked for Dennis as an editor at Firehouse Magazine for six years. He was a wonderful, generous boss, and very kind to his staff. May God bless His soul and give comfort to his family.
