SMITH, Dennis Scott – June 7, 1960 – June 4, 2022

Dennis was born and raised in Grand Blanc, Michigan and was able to retire with the love of his life in Gladwin, Michigan on Wixon Lake!

He is survived by his wife, Bethany Jo Smith, after spending 29 years together. They traveled the world and enjoyed many adventures from Sangria in Spain, gem mining in the mountains, or art walks in Paris.

Dennis had a passion for traveling and he and Bethany wanted to experience the world together. Dennis spent much of his professional life as a first responder. He was a police officer, volunteer firefighter, fire instructor at Mott, and was the first Fire Chief for Grand Blanc City Fire Department. He dedicated his life to serving the public and was proud of his son and grandson that followed in his call for duty.

Dennis was a man that could be counted on for help if needed, a wise word, or a perfect timed comment.

He enjoyed his grandchildren and loved spending time with all of them whether it be for a game, concert, or celebration. He didn’t miss a football or basketball game and loved watching the game with family including snacks. It was a tradition for him and his grandson to sing the fight song with any touchdown.

He is survived by his son, Brandon Smith;

daughters, Amy Harding, Heather Smith and Stefanie Smith;

grandchildren, Cameron, Ian, Isabella, Noah, Lawrence, Rebecca, Lucy and Aiden.

He also leaves behind siblings, Larry (Linda) Smith and Kenneth (Tiffany) Belford. Spousal parents, Robert (Gloria) Belford.

He follows in death his parents, Frank (Loraine) Smith and brother, Michael Smith.

Memorial visitation will be held at 12 p.m. and Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2022 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road.

Those desiring may make contributions to The 100 Club of Flint and Genesee County.

Not sure what to say?

I only learned of the passing of Dennis. I loved the guy. He was very helpful to me. Very knowledgeable guy in many areas. My heart bleeds for Beth because I adored her. I am very sad, very sad!

Single Memorial Tree

Dennis was a hardworking, nice person. I met Dennis when he was the building inspector for the city. My sympathies to the Smith family. Dennis and the rest of the Smith family were (and still are) contributors to helping make Grand Blanc what it is today.

So saddened to hear this. Dennis was on my Saturday morning Southland Lanes bowling league team, we had a lot of fun with that, as well as a fellow GBHS 78 grad. Our condolences to the family.

very sad to hear of the loss of dennis, many prayers to his family, i first met dennis in kindergarten in 1965 and were friends all through school to graduation, i watch him go through the cadet program and teased him sometimes about it. we remained friends after school for many years and i worked for his father at colony market. dennis taught me how to fire a pistol out behind the store and his dad was a darn good shot too. i have many great memories of dennis, how he was honest, fair,...

Dennis was my Field Training Officer in 1986.He taught me a lot about police work and fire fighter.He was a great teacher of these two professions.

Sorry for your loss. Dennis was a great friend of the Genesee County Building Inspectors and we will sure miss him.

The cosmos has lost a good man. And. I'm so sorry, Beth. You and Dennis were the definition of soul mates.

Dear Bethany and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Dennis was a wonderful man who will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Marilea Meder
