Not sure what to say?

went to High School with him..i was looking up old classmates and found this. so very sad!

I was a student of Dr. Main's two years ago in his geology class. His was an extremely talented and enthusiastic man who had a unique approach that made the subject interesting for me.
He took us on a field trip to Grapevine Lake instead of holding class one nice Spring day, paid for the class's admission out of his own pocket, and showed us the rock formations at Rockledge Park.
My condolences to his family and the scientific community in their loss of this special person.

I was with a group of teachers who visitied the Archosaur site. I met Derek and was immediately impressed by his genuine love of what he did and willingness to teach others in "laymens" terms. He will be missed.

I am only just now reading that Dr. Main has died. I met him at one of his energetic lectures on the Arlington Archosaurus (forgive me if I've misspelled it). He was so young and enthusiastic. His death is truly a loss for our community.

Derek a unique individual. Whenever I hear about Saturn, or other topics he spoke about in class (2012) "I think of Dr.Main a lasting memory of dedication."

I think... Derek Main's presence on Earth... And with his means of sharing knowledge and awareness with so much enthusiasm and purpose... More so than effectively 98% of EVERYONE I have known in 50 years of life (on Earth)... I reason that given any "Hero" in history, that one would want to talk with... Be it a religious hero, inspirational hero, Ghandhi, John Wayne or The Guy Who Cures Cancer... It's a long shot to not think any one of them is sitting in a circle in the dirt listening to...

Derek's passing was grieved deeply, and his life was remembered fondly tonight at the Dallas Paleo Society meeting. Prayers that Derek's family can treasure the memories of his scientific and people passions. Derek was one in a million.

My deepest sympathy to those dear to you. You facilitated learning for so many. I understood much more from your explanations than I had ever learned from books. Thank you for those field experiences!

Derek was a bright, enthusiastic young man with great positive energy. He was well liked by everyone who knew him at the Dallas Musuem of Natural History, the Dallas Paleo Society and throughout the Geology/Paleontology circles locally. I always enjoyed seeing him when our paths crossed and catching up. He will be greatly missed.
