Not sure what to say?

Dearest Nancy, Stacey and Chris,
What a force he was, in his quiet, understated and refined way. Derry was the keystone of our newsroom. Calm, steady, reliable, unflappable. Yes, the Unflappable Mr. Bird. We were in awe of his vast repository of knowledge, bringing him last minute questions in the frenzy of the fast approaching on-air deadline. We were kept on our toes “out there on the tightrope”, working without a net, with his razor sharp wit and lightening fast comebacks. I worked...

So sorry to hear of Derry's passing. We worked together at WYOU when I co-anchored with Debbie Dunleavy and Derry did the weather. He was a true professional and helpful to others, and always dependable. My wife Sharon and I send our condolences to Nancy and the rest of the family. He will be missed.

A true gentleman and great birding partner

Dear Nancy and family,

Sending my sincere sympathy to you all. Derry was the mainstay of the newsroom when I was a college intern and then worked with him at WDAU. What a kind co-worker he was to me! I can still see him at his desk, cleaning out and puffing on his pipe, and tearing the copy from the wire service machine.

I hope that memories of all the good days and events you shared together will bring you some comfort at this difficult time. Just know that he'll...

Derry´s Name is written in The Book of Life! David L. Burrier, Scranton, Pa.

Hello Nancy.
Please accept my condolences. I have only the best memories of working with Derry at Channel 22, as well as the times we got together outside of work.
Derry was an outstanding person. I know I'm far from the only person to express my admiration, and sorrow at his loss.
God bless.

Dear, dear Nancy, I am SO VERY sorry!. Derry Gates Bird was a "staple" in our little Township of La Plume. I knew about him for years from his broadcasting days but especially, loved seeing him at our Township Building on voting day. He was a breath of fresh air as Judge of Election and was always fun when I would get confused about online voting. I've known him for so many years. I will miss him more than I can say. Please accept my most sincere sympathy to you and your family.

Nancy,
I am so sorry to hear of Derry's passing. He was such a great friend to Dad.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
