Despina (Notides) Kontulis, 81
WORCESTER - Despina (Notides) Kontulis, 81, of Worcester passed away peacefully Sunday, March 23rd 2014 with her devoted family, gathered by her side.
Despina was born in Epirus, Greece, a daughter of Michael and Lambrini (Verdi) Notides. She grew up and lived in Greece, until October 30, 1949, when she married the man that would be her husband for the next 50 years; Peter Kontulis. With her new husband Despina immigrated to the United States, settling in Worcester, where she has lived, except for the occasional trips to Greece to see family.
Despina co-owned and operated with her husband Peter, the P & D Pizza in Oxford many years until retiring in 1981.
Despina's husband Peter passed away in September of 2000. She is survived by her devoted children, George P. Kontulis and his wife Karen, Helen Kontulis-O'Brien and her husband Fran all of Worcester, Patricia Kontulis and her life partner Stephen Demas of Auburn; The six grandchildren she cherished and who cherished her; Mark, Megan, Nicole, Caitlin, Alexis and Serena; her three great grandchildren, Tyler, Gary and Matty. She also leaves a brother Fotios Notides, several sisters in law, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Six brothers and two sisters pre deceased her.
Despina enjoyed cooking, taking care of her three cats Moo, Blackie and Pumpkin and her occasional trips to the casinos. Despina cherished her Grecian heritage, her native foods, preparing them and especially sharing at special family gatherings and the holidays. These were her favorite times.
Funeral services and burial were Private. Memorial remembrances may be made to the Overlook Hospice at the Masonic Home, 88 Masonic Home Road Charlton Mass 01507, or the Worcester Animal Rescue League, 139 Holden St. Worcester Mass 01606. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
