My deepest sympathies, Ayano. I am so saddened. I am very much in mourning for your loss. I believe that Devin and I had a special connection. I will miss him terribly. Words do not adequately express.

My sincere sympathies to Devin´s family. Through the Carnegie Council, Devin was one of my first professional contacts when I moved to NYC in 2010 and someone I enjoyed consistently working with over the years. Always eager to host my United Nations seminar students, or to visit our campus for a lecture, Devin´s professional commitment and passionate lectures (and more than a few one on one debates!) will be missed.

I think Devin was in a music class with me. I recognize his face and his smile. He may have been thinking about a music minor or just taking the class to satisfy other requirements. Anyway, he was always sparring with another student who played cello... One day they were writing their assignments on the board and the other student wrote "Devin" with an arrow toward Devin's work while Devin simply wrote "cello" with an arrow toward the other's. This was in the winter of 1993. That was the...

I was very close to Devin in high school — he was my first boyfriend. We shared a love of music, cats, and passion for the environment. I remember him as a serious, loyal, and sensitive person with a creative and ravenously curious mind. He taught me a lot about music, and I still can’t hear Led Zeppelin without thinking of him. He cracked me up with his falsetto funny voices and comical guitar and drum antics. Having been more or less out of touch with him since our teenage years, even...

Ayano, I am holding space for your grief and all that you’re feeling and holding on to during this difficult time. Devin and I met briefly in 2009-2010 when I was a graduate student at NYU Center for Global Affairs. I learned about Carnegie Ethical Affairs and if memory served me correctly, met him at a talk there. He was so kind, grounded and brilliant. He taught in my program and took our class on a field trip to Human Rights Watch. I remember his humility. He was always open to listening...

There’s so much I will miss, from savoring an excellent beer to arguing the merits of trade agreements, but at the bottom of it all Devin brought a confidence that did more than back up his own views, it compelled him to hear and respect and amplify the views of others. How rare and special that was.
