Obituary

Devon Seymour was responsible and determined, even when he was a child. "He wanted a dog, so what he did was, he cut pictures out of magazines," said his father, James. "Every time you opened a door, there would be a dog." The family adopted a poodle-terrier mix, and later a German shepherd. Seymour, 21, of St. Louisville, Ohio, was killed June 9 in an explosion in Haqlaniyah. The reservist was based in Akron, Ohio. As a boy, Seymour liked to wear khaki and camouflage and had an avid interest in airplanes. He decided to join the Marine Reserves during his senior year of high school, after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. "He took his birth certificate in and he was too young," James Seymour said. He enlisted after he turned 18 and briefly attended Ohio State University and worked as a truck driver. He died a year after his father, an Ohio National Guardsman, returned from duty in Afghanistan. Devon's mother, Janet Seymour, said her son "was one of the good and decent people willing to help somebody. He was worth knowing."

Not sure what to say?

Devon, it really hit home how much time has gone by since you've been gone. I remember writing you about how many of your cousins were expecting at the same time. Those 4 kids all graduated this year from high school. Wow. It just seems like yesterday that we drove to Ohio for your high school graduation. I took the flowers up to the cemetary and will be there tomorrow for the Memorial Day ceremony. ❤ Mary

Devon, (and Family and Friends) My husband, Gary, and I work for the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) in St. Louis, Missouri. I received your name on my Memorial Day card and Poppy yesterday as part of our remembrance activities. I am so thankful to have met you, but not in this way. I thank you and your family for your sacrifices that allow me and my family to have the life we have today. My husband and I served in the Air Force, I myself joining at the age of 22 in February...

My nephew, my hero - thinking of the sacrifice you made for our Country. Miss you. Love, Mary

We went to the Memorial service in Michigan with Lachelle, Mike and Cece. Wish you could meet Cece. She is a bright little girl who reminds me of you!!!

We went to the Memorial Day service this morning. They had a good turnout. After the ceremony a flock of geese flew over in the missing man formation. They gave you a flyover.

Thinking of you today on your birthday. You are missed. Love, Mary
