TRAVERSE CITY — Dewey Joseph Sleder, a longtime resident of Traverse City, passed away Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at his home. He was 82, but liked it when many people said they thought he was much younger.

Born on Wednesday, May 18, 1927, in Traverse City, to one of the city's pioneer Bohemian families, Dewey was the son of the late Joseph and Ilda (Dewey) Sleder. Dewey graduated from Traverse City High School and then continued his education, earning his bachelor's degree in business administration from Michigan State University. He also proudly served our country during WWII as a member of the U.S. Navy.

On Saturday, Dec. 18, 1954, he married the former Joan Haglund, and together they raised their children, Janet and Kathy Jo. Dewey had been general manager of Cherry Growers, Inc., guiding the company as they expanded their services to the region. Over the years he was involved with many other cherry processing activities. Following his retirement, he worked as an inspector for the United States Department of Agriculture.

His focus was on his family and friends and he always enjoyed the fun times during the countless events, activities, and visits with them. Dewey had a talent for supporting his family with subtle guidance and wisdom. He was a riveting story teller always discussing past and present events with his grandchildren. He accepted challenges in his life with a calm assurance. Dewey had a witty sense of humor and enjoyed laughing with others. He and his family are grateful for all the caring and kindness shown by family, friends, neighbors, and health care providers.

He is survived by his best friend and wife of 54 years, Joan; his daughters, Janet (Frank) Zlomek of Kalamazoo and Kathy Jo (Peter) Radakovich of Traverse City; his grandchildren, Zoe, Frank Dewey, and Zachary Zlomek, Rachel and Nina Radakovich; and his sister, Kleo (Bob) Maltby. Also surviving are nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Dewey was preceded in death by his sister, Pat Wehr.

A gathering time for friends and family will be held this evening, Nov. 2, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. At Dewey's request, no memorial service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be directed to B.A.S.E.S., Attn: Scott Kelly, 208 W. Lincoln, Charlevoix, MI 49720. B.A.S.E.S. is the Bay Area Substance Education Services, helping local young people live a substance-free life; or to the Traverse City Senior Center, 801 E. Front St., Traverse City, MI 49686.

Not sure what to say?

Dear Sleder family,
My dad, Jim Sharp, was great friends with "Uncle Dewey" as we kids called him. He was a legend in our family and we have thought of him and Traverse City often. On October 29th, Wendy, Jody and I were all together for Mom's birthday. She brought a box of Dad's momentos and among them was a full page ad in the Traverse City Eagle wishing the TCHS football team good luck on their season. It was so fun to see Jim Sharp and Dewey Sleder on the list. It is my prayer...

Janet, I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Knowing you I know that your parents are very special people.

God bless

Joan- We were so blessed to have been a part of Dewey's life, he absolutely made our day with his smiles and always happy words for everyone. We will miss his positive attitude and wonderful sense of humor. God bless you and your family! David Walker, Becky, Nancy, Shar, Deb and Suzann.

It is very comforting to see what a wide ranging impact that Dad had on so many others. We deeply appreciate all of the kind words from those of you near and far.

Joan and Family: My heartfelt prayers to all. I will always remember Dewey from our high school days. He always made my day with his humor. One of the good guys!

Dear Jo, Janet & Kathy,
Dewey could make me smile whenever he was near. What a sweet man. We'll all miss him immensely.

In 1968 Dewey saved my family financially. I was employed at Michigan Consolidated Gas and they went on strike. I had worked for
Cherry Growers from 1952-57 and went and asked Dewey for a job and he hired me. He told me to get a chauffer's license and come back as he had a load to hall that night. I drove semi for Cherry Grower's for 5.5 months until MichCon went off strike. This job meant so much to me and my family. Dewey was a great guy and we extend our deepest sympathy.

Janet ....... So sorry to hear about the loss of you dad. (I'm so glad one of our old friends let me know) I know what it's like to lose someone who has a special place in your heart.......A DAD. You will be thankful for all your memories that you shared with him, for it helps on the days to come. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Wishing you and your family the best at this difficult time.

Dear Jo, Janet, Kathy and families,
Matt and I are so sorry to hear about Dewey. I'll never forget spending time with him out at Petobego. You're in our thoughts. Love,
