WHEN I WOULD VISIT MY GRANDMA, MY COUSIN LINDA KRUM LIVED UPSTAIRS. WE KIDS WOULD HANG OUT WITH DIETER. HE WOULD HAUL OUT A TRUNK OF HIS CALLED "TONDAMAN" WE PUT ON PUPPET SHOWS ETC. HE WOULD WEAR HIS LEATHER GERMAN SHORTS. OFTEN WONDERED WHERE HE WAS. SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS. HE WAS A GOOD GUY.

I am so sory to hear his sudden death. I have great memories of Dieter from the time we worked together in UCSF. He taught me the first steps in Molecular Biology. Great times! My thoughts go to his wife and sons.

I am so sorry to have this news. I went to high school, that ground of ambiguous experiences, with Dieter but did not know him well. Six years later, we startled each other, meeting by accident in the plaza at Sather Gate. I was in an ill-fated attempt to get a history Ph.D. Dieter said he was doing something with botany or plants -- it sounded like a job; I had no idea of the graduate and professional work to come.
