Not sure what to say?

Still remembering Don today- he was such an amazing man. My thoughts are with all his family-

Still remembering Don Today- his kindness and his caring. We´re still holding a torch for him and keeping on the good fight to protect and nurture our natural world. My kindest regards to his family, Amanda

I think it was August 12th that my cellphone buzzed. I answered and heard a strange, inarticulate voice on the other end. I apologized that I couldn't understand what the caller was saying or wanted. Then another voice, a woman, came on the line explaining that she was a nurse and that the caller was Don Greene, and that he needed to talk with me. Sensing something really bad, I found out where Don was and dashed over to Memorial Hermann. It was hard to hold back my emotions as I looked...

I join my brother Lee in remembering our day on the Comal above Hueco Springs. We lost the canoe in a big hole -- the canoe came up a few days later, broken in two pieces. But we youngsters all survived the experience and lived to tell the story many times. The New Braunfels fire dept was involved in trying to rescue the canoe. A big rope strung across the river, as I remember it... I'm always trying to outdo my bothers, of course, especially my younger brother Lee. Don was exactly 4 years...

My brother, sister, and I took Don on his first whitewater adventure, sending him for a swim when we flipped an overloaded canoe at Hueco Falls on the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels. Guess he must have enjoyed it. I taught Don to roll a kayak, and he learned as fast as anybody I have ever taught.

Spent lots of good times with Don in high school and beyond.

Years ago a group of lamas from one of the Tibetan monasteries led a meditation on the banks of the bayou. Don had a piece of that, somehow, too.

Don was as much of a mensch as I've ever met. I was looking for a canoe to photograph birds from back 25 years ago, and everyone I talked to in Southeast Texas said "go talk to Don Greene." So I looked up Don Greene, (turned out he was only a couple of miles from my front door!) and called him, and he said "sure. Tomorrow morning good? early?"
"What's "early"?"
"Eight?"
"Seven's better."
"GREAT! Just pull into the boatyard. The gate's chained but I never lock the lock, just don't...

Don not only fought to keep Buffalo Bayou's banks from being denuded and its channels natural, but was always helpful and kind. His White Water Experience made it possible for so many the opportunity and pleasure to explore our bayous. A fine human being who is, and will always be greatly missed.- See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/houstonchronicle/obituary.aspx?n=don-greene&pid=172171029#sthash.j6hGgCEu.dpuf

Don was a big figure in promoting the preservation and use of Texas Rivers and Bayous. He helped so many Houstonians get involved into canoeing and rivers. He will be sadly missed.

Don led numerous trips for us at Austin High School here in Houston over the years. It was the first exposure to nature and the water for many of our inner city kids, and Don was always patient and watchful over them. The city of Houston has lost something special.
