Father Don, as he was lovingly known by my husband and myself. He officiated at the Mass for my husband, John's burial in 2007. My church persons lovingly commented how much Father Don and husband John looked so much alike. It made me feel so very close to Father Don at that time and forever. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Father Don Bates was an amazing humble, caring man who always put others before we himself. I treasure the little time I spent with him at CHRP retreats at St Jude Church in 2011 -2013filled with the Holy Spirit. Rest in Peace you amazing servant of Christ christ

Fr. Bates often helped out at St Lawrence O'Toole in Matteson when I was a parishioner. His gentle demeanor and meaningful homilies are two qualities I remember most about him.

Fr. Don was a dear friend. 15 years ago I joined the men ministry when Fr. Don was leading a group program. He was a wonderful spiritual director and mentor for the ministry. I will always remember the day in October 2009 when I was struggling with a very stressful family problem and went to St. Jude to talk to him. The staff said it was his off day but saw that I was distraught and they called him at home. He immediately came over and consoled me with love and care, as well with...
