Donald was born in Galva, KS on May 19, 1929 to Jacob and Elizabeth (Funk) Berg. Donald attended Galva High school and participated in many athletic activities, including football and basketball. He graduated in 1947. Donald’s father also passed away that year. In 1948, Donald left Kansas and joined the U.S Air Force. He attended basic training at Lackland A.F.B in San Antonio, TX where he volunteered to play football. He continued his 20-year career traveling the world as a jet mechanic and administrative assistant where he was stationed in Japan, Germany, and several different states back home. Once he left the Air Force in 1968, he went on to earn a Master’s Degree in accounting. He used the degree to further his career in Civil Services doing payroll for the U.S Air Force in Denver, Colorado. He retired in 1991. Donald also lost his wife of 40 years that year.

During his retirement, Donald bought a farm and tried his hand at raising hogs. He also loved to dance, play cards, meet new people and go to baseball games. He met his second wife, Dorothy, while dancing. They were married in 1994 in Storm Lake, IA. Sadly, she passed away in 2001. Donald went on to search for companionship and met his third wife, Ginger, while dancing. They married in 2004 in Webster City, IA. They shared their life together until 2019 when she passed away. Donald then moved to Sioux Falls, SD where he was cared for by his son Charles until he was moved to an assisted living. There he continued to charm all he met and make new friends.

Not sure what to say?

I’m so sorry to hear of Don’s passing. I work with the Galva KS Museum and he was such a source of information for us. So glad we have pictures of the Berg gas station they had here in Galva. He will be missed.

I love you grandpa. Thank you for all the wonderful memories!! ❤
