Not sure what to say?

Mr. Buttermore was my math teacher for my 8th and ninth grades at Gunston Jr. High in Arlington , Virginia in 1962-63. I will always remember him for his sense of humor and his joy of teaching! He has always been my favorite teacher and I have fond memories of my time in his classroom. My condolences to all his family.

To this day, I remember Mr. Buttermore's 10th grade advanced geometry/algebra class at Yorktown High School in the 1973-74 school year. He often told anecdotes from the life and work of Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky. He was a superb teacher. Sometimes he would hand out a quarter to a student who got the first correct answer to a problem on the board and I remember getting a few of those. You would think that a quarter was not a big deal, but it was a symbol of showing us he appreciated a...

Mr. Buttermore was a fine math teacher, inspiration, friend, & I remember he loved the guitar playing of Charlie Byrd. May he rest in peace. Bob Holmes (YHS 77)

Mr. Buttermore was my geometry teacher in 9th grade, 1987-88. He was the best math teacher I ever had, at any level, he was dedicated, patient, and understanding.

Mr. Buttermore at Gunston Junior High in Arlington, Va, was the greatest math teacher I ever had. He had students playing chess after class and doing science fair projects. Memorable things included his Top Dog list and Moxie drink at the end of the school year.

Thanks for being an inspiring mathematics teacher and great roll model. I will never forget you class.

Charles Biro, YHS 81, PSU 86 CE, and GWU 99 MEM

A great math teacher and a life-long inspiration.

I'll never forget our first day of math with Mr. Buttermore (Gunston Jr. High, 1960), when he enraptured the class by cutting a Moebius band lengthwise down the middle, producing a most surprising result (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWrfQwrUWnM). He imbued his students with a love of mathematics in a way that few teachers can hope to emulate.

His influence on generations of math students in Arlington cannot be overstated. Thank you, Mr. B!
