Donald R. Devins, 74, known by many as Chipper, entered into eternal rest on Friday, December 29, 2023 at Baystate Medical Center surrounded by family. Born in Springfield, son of the late Charles and Dorothy (Theriaque) Devins, he was a 1967 graduate of West Springfield High School.  He lived in West Springfield most of his life. Donald worked as a custodian for the West Springfield School System for thirty-five years, retiring in 2000.  He was an avid sports enthusiast, and loved spending time with his family and loved making people laugh.  He leaves his wife of twenty-nine years, Theresa (Formica) Devins. Three children and their spouses, JoAnn and Rondale Willis of Cherryville, NC, Donald R Jr. And Melissa Devins of Chicopee, and Shawn R. and Brianna Devins of West Springfield, three sisters, Rose A. Zimmerman, Dorothy J. Devins, Theresa Brannkarr all of West Springfield, five grandchildren, Emilee, Eli, Ava, Robert, Charles and nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by two brothers, Vincent F. Devins and Charles Devins.  Calling hours are Wednesday from 4-7pm at Curran Jones Funeral Home, 109 Main Street, West Springfield followed by a funeral home service at 7pm.  The burial will be private. If you grew up in the Merrick Section, you knew Chipper. To be honest, I'm not sure I knew his name was Donald. He was always Chipper to me. Chipper was a super friendly, hard-working guy who was always willing to take time to lend a hand or help you fix something. I think he got my brother and me into CB radios, too. He was over our house quite a bit when I was a kid, or I'd see him while I was walking to or from the Boys & Girls Club, and he was always fun to stop and talk to. A Merrick...

I knew Chipper all through the 1960's and 70's. He was a hell of a nice guy and my mother especially love him. He was very good to myself, my brother, Mike and my brother, Neil. Chipper was always welcome in our home on Union st. I saw Chipper about 5 years ago in WS after not having seen him since around 1980. 40 years later, I recognized his voice and asked if it was him.
