Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home - Westchester Obituary

Donald “Tick” Flannery passed away on October 7th in the comfort of his home and surrounded by his loving family.  He faced a stage 4 cancer diagnosis four weeks ago with courage and determination to live, but after a brave battle he accepted death and told his family he was dying a happy man.  Tick got his nickname as a small boy with a stutter during the Great Depression when he would affectionately threaten his next-door neighbor, a Bundt candy driver, with “t-t-t-tick em up.” Tick attended St. Phillips and was the President of the Resurrection High Club his senior year.  He served in the Korean War and used his G.I. benefits to attend the Dublin School of Court Reporting.  This led to a 40-year career as a court reporter where Tick served on several high-profile trials in the state of Illinois.

Tick met his soul mate, Kathie Keys, at church on Easter Sunday.  He asked her to his senior prom and the rest is history.  They went on to have eight children, twenty-four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.  Tick was a friend to all, loving uncle, proud grandfather, and set the gold standard for what it means to be a father and a husband.  He raised his children to love all people and led by example. Tick counted his accomplishments in life to be 66 years of marriage, his family, and living to see his beloved Cubs win the World Series. But “One” of his proudest moments came when he read the results of a genealogy test which proved he was 100% Irish, a “purebred.”

Tick was born on January 19, 1933. Dear son of George and Bernice (nee Egan) Flannery; loving brother to the late Robert (Mary), the late James (Mary), the late Bernice (Ed), the late Jack (JoAnn) Flannery.  Devoted husband to Kathie (Keys) and father to Jeannie, Meghan, Pati, Hugh John (Millie), Matt (Melody), Timothy (Mary Chris), Stacy (John), and Ryan (Bonnie). Proud grandfather to Jana (Emile), Grace, Kevin (Sophia), Kelsey (Alex), Lauren (Jack), Kaitlyn (Phil), Dylan, Mariah, Sean, Ireland, Joe, Lia, Isabella, Seamus, Ella, Sophia, Phoebe, Emmett, Nora, Matthew, Rowan, Brigid, Packy, and Quinn.  Great-grandfather to Emile, Luke, Shea and Thomas.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home, 10501 W. Cermak Road, Westchester, IL.  Funeral Friday 9:45 a.m. from the funeral home to Ascension Church, 808 S. East Ave, Oak Park for 10:30 a.m. Mass. Interment private. Not sure what to say?

condolences to the family. rip don.

I just heard of Don´s passing today. Lynda and I will never forget how kind Kathy and Don were to us as a young married couple in Oak Park. They made us feel like family. Too many memories from working together riding our bikes to Maywood courthouse, parish plays at Ascension Church plus inclusion in family events. He will be in my prayers.

This photo was taken at Dorothy Smart and Walter Keys´ celebration of 150 years of life. As always Tick and Kathy were the center of fun! He will be greatly missed.

Ticker, Kathi, and the Flannery's are a perfect example of what made our community so special. Hundreds of families and thousands of us kids have common connections, stories, triumphs and tragedies that bind us together for life. Just look at how many of their kids are still connected to friends they grew up with. That's a rare gift that many do not have.Ticker, Kathi, and so many parents like them, taught us that. It makes us all better and our kids see us and learn from that as well. We're...

A full mortal life with known contentment at its end provides continuity thru a lifetime of amazing memories for loved ones.

We pray this for his family and friends.

Donald Flannery obviously lived a very full life, one in which he surely was very much loved and respected - he surely will be missed by many.

The Navarro & our extended families

We are sending love, respect, and peace to all of you from Oregon. My Dad Tom Cregan loved Uncle Tick very much and spoke loving, kind words and memories of him during his last days.

Dear Kathie, Jeannie, Meghan, Pati, Hughie, Matt , Timbo, Stacy, Ryan and extended family members, I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of a great man, your man Ticker. Words can't describe what a positive impact he had on so many people in his life. Of course, you're all like family to us so I'm sorry to say that all I can do is give you each one of you a big air hug as I won't be able to make the wake or funeral. Unfortunately, in the days we're living in, if you're not feeling well it's...

Papa Ticker was a wonderful man with a contagious smile and laugh! His legacy lives on through this amazing family. Honored to have known him.

To the Flannery clan, It's heartbreaking for me to hear of Tick passing. Your families history with my family goes back to when I was 12 years old and we lived across the street from you on Cuyler. I was the main babysitter for the kids but more than that our family's became great friends and that lasted to this day. I have so many memories and they are all good. My mom moved up to Lakeside, Michigan after my dad died and after visiting many times Kathie and Tick bought a place up there....
