Not sure what to say?

Donald Edward Girard, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, physician, teacher, friend, died September 18 surrounded by family. He passed peacefully - and fittingly - at OHSU, where he had spent 41 years as a physician and educator, helping countless patients, families, and residents.

Don was a truly kind and remarkable person. I am deeply grateful to have known him. His kindness, wisdom, and quiet support meant more to me than words can express. Don had a rare ability to make people feel seen, valued, and supported. He lived with dignity, compassion, and strength, and he truly made the world better through his presence. I will always carry his memory in my heart, and my thoughts are with his family. He will never be forgotten.

During my 23 years at OHSU, I had the privilege of getting to know many extraordinary people. Don stood out among them. Not only was he whip smart, but he was compassionate, caring and kind always. His dedication to his patients and to OHSU was truly remarkable. The world is a better place for Don having been in it. My love and warm thoughts to Marlys, Melissa and the rest of his family.

One of the nicest people at OHSU. Bless him.

Don gave me my first real job as a physician and I was lucky to work elbow-to-elbow with him for several years precepting residents and delivering primary care. His doctoring was personal, pratical, and nonjudgmental. He was a kind mentor to countless residents, and to me. My heart goes out to Marlys and loved ones.

Don exemplified kindness and compassion. He trusted that everyone could learn and heal. It was with those values that he chaired the Oregon Medical Board and established the Oregon Wellness Program. Don believed that medical professionals experiencing difficulties should be helped. On a personal level Don made everyone feel special. Gratitude was his daily practice. His smile, his mischievous laugh and seemingly infinite patience will be missed. Love to Marlys.

Don was a lovely man, compassionate physician and loyal friend. I miss him and our frequent chats but am content that he now knows all the answers to the many things we pondered. Condolences to Marlys and family, rest in peace Don.

Don was a wonderful man, so warm and engaging. What a pleasure it was to have him as a colleague at OHSU. A big loss to all who knew him.

Dr Girard was our physician when we moved from Salem. He was an incredibly kind and gifted Dr. He was a friend to us and we are very saddened to hear of his passing. Besides being an amazing human being, he was the most dapper Dr I´ve ever seen. Condolences, Sue and Arnie Franks
