R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home - Hampton Obituary

Don Halifax, retired Hampton Fire Department Battalion Chief, passed away Saturday, October 14. He was born August 19, 1943 in Port Huron, Michigan where he lived until being drafted into the Army in 1966 and assigned to Fort Eustis. A thirty year veteran of the Hampton Fire Department, he loved his job and was proud to be a member of that special fraternity of medic/firefighters who selflessly risk their lives for others. He looked forward to each new day and no two days were ever the same. In retirement Don’s favorite past-time was RVing with his wife around Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, spending time with all the wonderful friends he made along the way.

Don was preceded in death by his mother, Stella Roberts Halifax, father, Ralph Halifax and his brother, David Halifax, all of Port Huron and his mother-in-law, Alma Charles of Newport News. Left to cherish his memory are his loving family, wife of fortyeight years, Peggy Halifax; son, Michael Halifax of Newport News, and son, Shawn Halifax and daughter-in-law, Kain Halifax of Charleston, South Carolina.  He is also survived by many brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He is a member of the Hampton Roads Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 19, 2017 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. Interment with Army honors and Fire Department honors will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 –6:30 Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Parkinsons Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.

Not sure what to say?

I’ve known Don since th3 early 2000’s. He and Peggy would join us in Louisbourg, N.S. every fall for 3-4 weeks. He was a wonderful person and we spent a lot of time together. Don has been held safe in His arms, as the Lord only takes the best! RIP Don. We loved you.

Din was a good friend and was a kind and gentle man. I knew him for several years and he was always fun to be around. Don - you are missed.
Coralie

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.

Dear Peggy , So sorry to learn of Don's passing , my thoughts and prayers are with you .

"For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him" 1Thessalonians 4:14
Peggy, Michael, Shawn and Kain, please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Sorry to hear the sad news of Don's passing.
I had the good fortune of working with Don as firefighters at Station 1 in the mid to late seventies. He was the most positive and sincere person I have known. He loved the fire service, people in general and most importantly his family. I know he will be missed by all! Please accept our sincere sympathy and we are praying for you during this difficult time.

Dear Peggy .... my heart goes out to you at this, your darkest hour. Please know how much I love you. Don was so very special. Our group of six is no more. Stay strong.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family, fire department family and the many friends you have left behind. It was an honor to work beside you and learn from you. You were one of the best mentors a person could ever ask for! Thank you for everything you did for, not only me, but all of us in the department. You were always looking out for your crew and it never went unnoticed! I am proud to have you as my friend! You will be missed by so many of us! Until the day we see you again!
