Donald M. Jones, 101, of Bangor, PA passed away Monday, September 18th, at Slate Belt Health and Rehab. Center. 


Donald was born in Bangor, PA on September 5, 1922, a son of the late Richard W. and Florence (Mansfield) Jones.


He was the widower of Ruby M. (Anglemyer) Jones who passed away in 2004. 


Donald was a 1940 graduate of Bangor High School and attended Churchman's Business College.  He was employed as a Supervisor of Dying and Finishing at the former Blue Ridge Winkler Textiles in Bangor, PA, for 30 years until retiring. 


Donald served three years in the US Army during WWII with the Military Police in the European Theater and with the 780th Amphibious Tank Battalion in the Pacific Theater of Operations. 


He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bangor, PA, where he sang in the church choir.  He was a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood Fraternal Organization, Chairman of the World Hunger Program at Church, a charter member of the "Loaves and Fish" Food Bank, served on the Lutheran Church Council, and was chairman of the Lutheran Church Board of Trustees and the Lutheran Cemetery Board.  


Donald served on the 3rd Ward Election Board, was the finance Chairman of the Bangor Public Library, member of the St. David's Welsh Society and Welsh Chorus. He was a charter member and Director of Slate Belt Homefront Inc., a member and past President of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association., and served on the Board of Directors at Slate Belt Nursing and Rehab. Center, and was a member of the Slate Belt Heritage Center where he was an active participant in the Heritage Day Programs. 


Donald was a Life Member and Past Commander of the Bangor VFW, a member and Past Commander of the Martocci-Capobianco American Legion Post 750 in Roseto, a Past President of the Joint Veteran's Council of the Forks of Delaware, a member of AMVETS Post 17 in Easton, a member of the Marine Corp League of Bethlehem, a member of the "Legion of Honor" of the Chapel of the Four Chaplains in Valley Forge, PA, and a member of the Bangor Memorial and Veteran's Day Committee. 


Donald is survived by two nieces Joan Uliana and Linda Milligan.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Verna LaBar, and a brother, William R. Jones.
 
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, September 22nd at Gaffney Parsons Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 314 S. First Street, Bangor, PA.  Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 10 AM to 11:30 AM on Friday, September 22nd at the funeral home.  The burial will be held at St. John's Cemetery in Bangor, PA. I met Donald in 2008 when I started working in a downtown revitalization program in Bangor. I soon came to know that if I had a question or curiosity about history of Bangor, and later, as my job expanded, all of the Slate Belt, Donald was the go to person. I spent many good times in Donald’s den looking at Slate Belt historical photos and documents on his huge computer screen. What a special, dear man, Donald was to our family, especially my Dad, Fritz Jones. May you find peace and comfort, as you think of the legacy of history and friendship he shared with so many.

Denny´s dad worked with Donald at Blue Ridge years ago and we have always remained friends with him. We´ve also had the pleasure of working with him on the library board and other local projects. What a gem and a gentleman we have all lost!
