Donald R. MacKenzie passed away peacefully on December 12, 2021 at Holyoke Medical Center, with his family by his side. Born on September 28, 1946 to Donald and Hazel MacKenzie. Don grew up in South Hadley, graduating from South Hadley High School in 1964, where he was a member of the undefeated ’63 Suburban League Football Champs. He began his adult life by serving his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, where he was honorably discharged from in 1969. His job opportunities were many, but he then attained his dream job of becoming a firefighter on the South Hadley Fire District #1 Fire Department as a firefighter and EMT. Serving his community for 35 years, retiring in 2010. Don continued his service as an EMT/athletic trainer for youth sports in South Hadley and Holyoke Catholic High School. After retirement he could be found on the golf course with friends, spending time with his grandchildren and enjoying each day with his love, Catherine. He is survived by his wife, Catherine (McGrath) MacKenzie, who was his high school sweetheart, and married to for 52 years, his son Brian MacKenzie and wife Leslie of East Longmeadow, daughter Amy Smith and husband Matt of Chicopee, and three grandchildren Mackenzie and Asher Smith, and Scarlett MacKenzie whom he adored. He also leaves behind his two sisters Sandra O’Connell and husband Jim, Joan McKenna and husband Ken, both of South Hadley, and brother Ray MacKenzie and wife Shirley of Granby, along with many nieces and nephews. The funeral Mass will be Friday December 17th at 11:15 am at St. Patrick’s Church followed by burial with Military Honors in the Massachusetts Veteran’s Cemetery in Agawam. Calling hours at the O’Brien Family Funeral Home, 33 Lamb St., South Hadley, MA will be Thursday December 16th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.
